10 Ways to Be a Better Bettor

Beginner · 6 min read

There's no secret system that prints money. Sorry. But there is a short list of habits almost every long-term winner shares, and that most losing bettors ignore. Here are ten.

The ten habits

  1. Shop for the best line, every time. The easiest edge there is. Keep a few accounts and always take the best number. Over a season, the saved juice alone can be the difference between green and red. (More in Line Shopping.)
  2. Know the vig, and only bet with an edge. Learn to strip the book's cut out of a price so you know the true odds, then bet only when your read beats that fair number. (See Removing the Vig.)
  3. Protect your bankroll. Pick a number you can afford to lose, then bet a small, steady slice of it per play, usually 1% to 3%. This is what keeps a cold streak from ending your season.
  4. Keep records. Track every bet: sport, number, stake, result. You can't fix what you don't measure, and your log will show you where you're actually good.
  5. Bet with your head, not your heart. Betting your favorite team, or against a rival, clouds everything. If you can't be honest about a game, skip it.
  6. Specialize. It's a lot easier to find an edge in one league or one bet type you know cold than to bet everything on the board. Depth beats breadth.
  7. Go easy on parlays and long shots. Fun in small doses, sure. But the stacked-up vig makes them a lousy foundation for a real bankroll. (See The Single-Bet Strategy.)
  8. Try to beat the closing line. If you keep getting a better number than where the game closes, you're almost certainly doing something right. It's the best scorecard there is.
  9. Respect the public, and sometimes fade it. Casual money floods favorites, overs, and popular teams, which can push those prices past fair and leave value on the other side.
  10. Stay disciplined. No chasing losses, no doubling up to get even, no betting on tilt. Discipline is the thing that makes the other nine work.
The rule most beginners skip

Bet a steady 1% to 3% of your bankroll per play and quit trying to size up on a "lock." A $1,000 bankroll means roughly $10 to $30 a bet. It feels slow. That's the point. Slow is what survives the losing streaks that wipe out everybody betting on feel.

What ties them together

Notice what's not on this list. No magic picks. No can't-miss system. No inside info. Winning at this is mostly boring stuff done over and over: get the best price, know your true odds, protect your money, stay objective, keep records. Nail those and you're already ahead of almost everyone putting cash down.

Key takeaways

  • There's no secret system. Winners just run the same simple habits over and over.
  • Line shopping, knowing the vig, and tight bankroll management are the foundation.
  • Bet objectively, specialize, keep records, and try to beat the closing line.
  • Discipline (no chasing, no tilt, no oversized 'locks') is what makes it all work.
